MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA (November 9th, 2020) – PlaySight Interactive, the leading global sports video technology platform, is pleased today to announce a new technology partnership with Alabama State’s baseball program. The Hornets compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and play their games at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Led by head coach Jose Vazquez, they are the latest collegiate baseball program to add PlaySight’s video technology platform.

Managing the Hornets’ baseball program for the past five seasons, coach Jose Vazquez helped lead Alabama State to Black College Nines HBCU Baseball “Shortened Season” National Poll Championship this year. The Hornets won back to back championships in 2015 and 2016 while Vazquez was the associate head coach.

We had the pleasure of sitting down (virtually, of course) with coach Vazquez to find out about his expectations for the program and plans with PlaySight baseball technology.

Why did you decide to make the investment in PlaySight?

“We met in the fall and came to the conclusion that we needed to upgrade our technology at Wheeler-Watkins Stadium. After a generous donation, we met with PlaySight and they did an outstanding job explaining their product and showing how it could help us improve as a baseball club. It was a no-brainer for us.”

How do you plan to use PlaySight for coaching/player development? For recruiting?

“Player development is an integral part of our program and PlaySight will help tremendously. Having the ability to review at-bats/pitching mechanics in real-time with the application will allow us to make adjustments on the spot. The multiple angle camera system from PlaySight is state of the art and will help us continue to make great strides in the development of our players. From a recruiting standpoint, PlaySight will set us apart in the conference as we will be the only university with a multiple angle camera system. We will be able to show recruits right away how we help them improve during their time at ASU.”

How do you plan on using PlaySight for broadcasting? Do you think PlaySight will help with the uncertainty around fans attending games/practices this upcoming season?

“With all of the limitations due to COVID-19, having the ability to live stream every home game for our fans and alumni is vital. PlaySight gives us this ability with a click of a button. We have student-athletes from all over the country, so many parents are not able to attend each home game. But now that we can stream live, they will be able to watch each game with a simple subscription.

Before PlaySight, how did you used to capture video in practices/games?

“We have always been a big proponent of filming every intrasquad and game but have been a little stuck in the “stone age” when it comes to the actual process. PlaySight will allow my coaching staff to review film right away instead of spending an “off day” uploading and transferring data from SD cards/hard drives to the computer for playback.”
